Littleton native and Plymouth State freshman Maddie Hunt matched a career-high with four goals as second-seeded PSU topped third-seeded Keene State College, 11-6, in the semifinals of the Little East Conference (LEC) Women’s Lacrosse Tournament at Panther Field Thursday.
The teams were embroiled in a tight back-and-forth contest throughout the first half, with PSU taking a narrow 4-3 lead into the break. Plymouth State shutout the Owls in the third quarter, though, scoring seven unanswered goals to take control.
A 5-foot-11 business major, Hunt scored twice in the opening five minutes of the second quarter as the Panthers pulled ahead 4-2. The Littleton High graduate completed the hat trick at the six-minute mark of the third quarter and netted her fourth of the afternoon as the lead ballooned to 11-3 with less than seven minutes to play.
Hunt currently ranks third on her team with 26 goals. She also sits fifth on the team in points with 28
This marked the Hunt’s third-four goal game of the season, previously doing so in wins against Salem State (March 11) and New England College (March 16), leading to LEC Rookie of the Week honors on March 21.
Hunt and Plymouth State (13-4) advance to the championship game for the eighth straight season and will face the winner of top-seeded Western Connecticut State University and fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine on Saturday.
Conway nets four in WSU playoff win
Billerica’s Clare Conway chipped in four goals and added an assist, as the Worcester State University Lancers beat the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers 15-5, on Tuesday.
The win lifted the Lancers to 11-7 (6-2 MASCAC) before heading to Framingham State for a MASCAC semifinal, where they lost 17-11, on Thursday.
A transfer student from Becker, Conway had been simply unconscious the past three weeks, riding a 12-game point streak, compiling 45 goals, six assists and 51 points over that span before being shut out in Thursday’s loss. Her impressive run included a season best nine goal, 10 point barrage, in a 14-10 win over Keene State on March 24.
Moran fronts Framingham State in postseason play
Ally Moran and the fourth-seed Framingham State softball team took the victory as the Rams defeated fifth seed Fitchburg State 5-3 in an opening round game of the MASCAC tournament Tuesday at Maple Street Field.
The Wilmington native went seven innings and allowing three earned runs on just nine hits with four strikeouts. In 23 appearances and 16 starts this season, the psychology major has gone 10-9, sporting a 2.29 earn run average, with 88 strikeouts in 116.1 innings.
The Rams lineup has been getting plenty of offensive support from senior shortstop Camille Desrochers. The Westford Academy product has been the model of consistency for the squad, toting a lifetime .315 batting average. The mathematics major seems to have saved some of her best stats for her senior season. She’s currently hitting .318, with three homers and 15 RBI.
Another Westford native, freshman Emily Strzegowski, is also earning her stripes with the team. The 5-foot-4 Elementary Education major has rounded out the team’s pitching staff. She’s made 12 appearances her rookie year, including three starts, going 3-2 with a 5.31 ERA.
Gizzi guides Plymouth State track to top 25 ranking
Jade Gizzi and the Plymouth State track team made its mark, following a successful run at the LEC Championships on April 30.
A Tewksbury High graduate, Gizzi helped anchor the Plymouth State women’s 4×400-meter relay team with a strong fourth place showing. The team, which also consisted of sophomores Mackenzie Labrie (Canaan, N.H.), Janelle Kitchin (Fair Haven, Vt.) and senior Claire Greineder (East Greenwich, R.I.) crossed the finish line in 4:34.82.
A 5-foot-7 junior, Gizzi has also been a staple on the team earning personal best times in the 100 (13.58) at Penmen Relays, April 16, the 200 (28.52) at the Tufts Sunshine Classic on April 23.
