DORCHESTER, MASS. (WHDH) – A front yard in Dorchester on Tonawanda Street has turned into a growing memorial for an 18-year-old killed in a two-car crash early Tuesday morning. Neighbors said that this was not the first crash in the area.

For Tanisha Tate, it was a sleepless night as she was awoken just after midnight by the crash.

“First, I saw the red jeep smash into the wall. I didn’t realize the car was right by my porch,” said Tate. “Then I saw the body laying there, and his friend was really trying to, begging the ambulance to help his friend first and ask people to come help. It was so heartbreaking.”

Tate said that crashes are common near her house on the corner of Tonawanda Street and Greenbrier Street, but they have never been deadly.

“Growing up, we had fences, we had hedges, and every time somebody runs into them,” said Tate.

Tate’s neighbor Leah Mills said she doesn’t feel like it is safe for her child to play in the nearby park. According to Mills, they have contacted the city to put in speed bumps at the intersection.

“It’s forceful. You don’t have a choice but to follow it,” said Mills. “You have to go over the speed bump, so you’re going to have to slow down. You’re naturally gonna wanna slow down.”

Police are still investigating what caused the deadly crash. They have not released the name of the man killed or the cause of the crash.

“That was somebodies child. Someone’s mother was waiting for that child to come home, and they did not make it,” said Leah Mills. “These streets are not safe.”
