Repeat offender from New Bedford sentenced for illegal gun possession

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A repeat illegal gun offender from New Bedford was sentenced to state prison after he was caught with another illegal gun.
According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, Rashawn Gray pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior court to indictments charging him with carrying an illegal firearm subsequent offense and possession of ammunition.
On August 9, 2022, New Bedford police were called to Rivet and County Streets for a reported altercation involving a gun. A witness told police they say a black man with braided hair, wearing shorts and a tank top, get out of an SUV and kick the door of another car.
That witness also told police that the man brandished a gun at the time.
Officers later found the suspect car driving down County Street and recognized the passenger in the front seat and identified him as Gray.
After police stopped the car Gray was in, they searched it and said they found a .22 caliber bullet in his seat, a Taurus Spectrum .380 handgun tucked into the framework of the car’s center console. The gun was loaded with five rounds in the magazine and one chambered.
Officials said Gray was previously convicted in 2019 of carrying an illegal firearm and served 18 months in county jail.
