Will Grier to Bill Belichick: Pick me
FOXBOROUGH – Bill Belichick delivered the same message to his quarterbacks as he did the media on Tuesday.
In short, everybody be ready to play.
Will Grier, who hasn’t had an opportunity to play yet, is taking Belichick’s message to heart. He is dying to play, and show everybody what he can do.
“I’d love that,” Grier said speaking with MassLive at his locker. “We’ll see how it goes. I’d love to have an opportunity. And would be ready to compete.”
Grier, who was signed off the Bengals practice squad in late September, hasn’t appeared in a game since 2019. He was impressive in the preseason while playing in Dallas, and is hoping to get a chance in Foxborough.
Grier wouldn’t indicate if he had gotten any starter reps Tuesday – “I’d rather let Bill or somebody else tell you how starter reps are divvied up” – but indicated he would be fine being on the same page with his receivers should it come to that.
“Good enough,” said Grier. “I think I could win for us if I got the opportunity.”
That’s a rather bold, confident statement coming from the quarterback, who was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round in the 2019 draft.
Grier said having this type of situation, where Belichick is opening it up for others to step in Week 12, is unique to him.
“I think it’s probably happened around the league, but it’s the same mentality,” he said. “It doesn’t what in this league, at this position, you just have to be ready to play. You never know what’s going to happen. Injuries happen. Things happen. You just have to prepare and be ready to go. It’s no different now.”
Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe took the early reps on Tuesday during the media window at practice, while Grier appeared to be more included in the mix last week.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said, “but I’ll be ready.”
Told there’s been a contingent of people pushing for him to start, Grier said with a smile: “I’m one of them.”
