BOSTON (WPRI) — Four World War II veterans returned home to Massachusetts Sunday night after their trip to Normandy, France, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

“Everybody over there really appreciated us,” said veteran Christy Fier. The trip marked eight decades since Allied forces stormed the beaches, a pivotal moment in the war.

One of those veterans included William Soule of Seekonk. It was his first time back in the country since fighting in the war.

“We met a lot of French civilians who really appreciated what we did over there,” Soule said. “A lot of bad memories, when we go back now everything is rebuilt and it’s a beautiful country over there, it’s a lot different than when I was there.”

Last November, Soule celebrated his 100th birthday alongside the Seekonk Police Department.
