CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Christmas may only come once a year, but the spirit of giving can be felt year-round. The local community proving that to be true Tuesday night during a holiday gift drive.

The Chicopee Police Association partnered with the Mercedes-Benz of Springfield to bring “Christmas in July.” It’s where a mobile Christmas Tree goes around to different businesses, encouraging people to give back this upcoming holiday season.

It stopped this evening at Leadfoot Brewery with all funds benefiting the departments December event “Shop with a Cop”, where Students will go on a Christmas shopping spree with police. The police department tells us it is their goal to reach a wider group of children this year.

“Last year we had an increase of demand for, you know, giving toys to kids. We went from 170 kids from the year before up to almost 320 last year. And we did see an increase in age range. So the chief of Police Association got involved to help the police department this year to try to get funds so we can shop for the older kids,” said spokesperson for Chicopee Police Department, Travis Odiorne.

They are hoping to collect at least $5,000 in funds from now to the end of November. The first week of December they will purchase gifts for 50 students, ages 13 to 16.
