DENNIS, Mass. (WLNE) – The New England Aquarium said it released six critically endangered sea turtles back into the ocean off Cape Cod after rehabilitation from life-threatening injuries.

After spending several months rehabilitating at the aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy, the six turtles were released into Nantucket Sound off West Dennis Beach on Wednesday evening.

The aquarium said the turtles were undergoing treatment for hypothermia-related conditions including pneumonia, dehydration, and emaciation.

The group of sea turtles includes one loggerhead, one green, and four Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles.

“We are thrilled to be releasing six more turtles back to their ocean home,” Director of Rescue and Rehabilitation Adam Kennedy said. “Knowing that each of these species are endangered, it is so rewarding to see our work directly contribute to conservation efforts that help ensure these populations continue to exist.”

The aquarium said that several turtles from this group were given satellite tags which will collect data on their post-release survivorship and behavior.

Tagged sea turtles can be tracked on an interactive map.

The names of the released turtles were Wolfsbane, Lilac, Hibiscus, Azalea, White Cedar, and Water Lily.
