The Wilmington High baseball team fell short of qualifying for the state tournament.

But the Wildcats ended their 2023 season on a high note Monday by capturing the championship of the Dick Scanlon Memorial Tournament on their home field with a thrilling 5-4 win over Pentucket Regional.

Austin Harper earned tournament MVP honors. He was the winning pitcher in the championship game and showed fortitude by going the distance after a tough start. He allowed four runs in the top of the first but then put up six zeroes.

Wilmington rallied by scoring twice in the first and then tallying three runs in the fourth to edge Pentucket.

Center fielder Eric Spinney went 2-for-3, drove in a run and scored a run. Second baseman Brett Ebert went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while left fielder Michael Dynan went 1-for-1 and also drove in a run.

Harper finished with six strikeouts, walked two and scattered seven hits in going the distance.

The championship was especially gratifying for Wilmington head coach Matt McManus, who played at WHS under Scanlon. Also named to the all-tournament team were Mike Monteforte, Jacob Spinney and Aydan Balter.
