A man in Goffstown, New Hampshire accused of stabbing his 70-year-old mother to death last month was arrested, authorities announced this week.

Thomas Humphrey, 47, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing his mother, Linda Tufts, by stabbing her in their home in Goffstown on Nov. 28, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, New Hampshire State Police Col. Mark B. Hall and Goffstown Police Chief Eric Sereno said in a joint statement Friday.

Police were sent to the home in Goffstown around 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 28. Inside the house, officers found Tufts’s body and a fire that was burning, according to another statement from the state attorney general, state police colonel and Goffstown police chief.

Officers extinguished the fire and, while doing a safety check inside the home, also discovered Humphrey, who was alive but injured. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for knife wounds that it appeared he inflicted on himself, the statement said.

A day later, an autopsy done by New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jennie Duval determined Tufts’s cause of death was multiple stab and incised wounds. The manner of her death was homicide, according to the statement.

“The investigation into the circumstances of Ms. Tufts’ death remains active and ongoing,” the statement said. “Based upon the investigation conducted to date, investigators believe that all relevant parties have been identified, and that there is no threat to the general public.”

Humphrey is expected to be arraigned in the Hillsborough County Superior Court Northern District in Manchester, according to the statement.
