The Sun’s Girls Basketball All-Star Team
Player of the Year
Gianna Donato
Tyngsboro
One of the all-time best players in program history, Donato, a senior guard/forward, closed out her four-year impressive career with 1,151 points, which is the most in the last 25 years. She averaged 17.4 points per game, including shooting 30 percent from beyond the three-point line. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game. Donato finished with 565 rebounds and 302 steals. Tyngsboro went 61-19 and advanced to the Division 4 Final 4 this past season. A two-time Sun and two-time Mid-Wach All-Star who was named the league’s MVP as a junior, Donato will play at Endicott College, with aspirations of becoming a nurse.
Player of the Year
Carly DiMento
Tyngsboro
Her number one sport is softball, which she’ll play at Bentley University, but DiMento certainly can play a little hoop. The senior point guard and two-sport captain broke a school record with 481 assists, to go along with 804 career points, 512 career rebounds and 61 victories during her time with the Tigers. A two-time Sun All-Star, a two-time Mid-Wach C All-Star, including the league’s MVP this season, she averaged 13 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks this season for the 22-2 Tigers, who advanced to the Final 4 of the Division 4 state tournament.
Coach of the Year
Chris Doneski
Billerica
A year after finishing 11-11, Doneski led the Indians to an outstanding 18-2 regular season in the extremely competitive Merrimack Valley Conference. Billerica defeated Andover twice, Central Catholic, Chelmsford twice, Methuen and Tewksbury, as well as non-league wins against state tournament teams Newburyport and Lincoln-Sudbury. Billerica went 1-1 in the Division 2 tournament.
Doneski was a three-sport athlete at BMHS and went on to play baseball at Holy Cross. He is in his 19th year as a teacher in the Billerica School system and this was his 14th season as head coach. He has a career record of 199-99, has been named the MVC Coach of the Year five times, the MBCA Division 1 Coach of the Year and now the Sun’s COY for the third time, the first since 2013.
Ella Hartson
Alvirne
A junior forward, Hartson led the Broncos to a 9-9 regular season before going 1-1 in the New Hampshire Division 1 playoffs, including an upset win over Goffstown in the first round. Through the team’s 20 overall games, she averaged 12.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.
For her efforts, Hartson was named the team’s Player of the Year and was selected to the NHBCO Division 1 honorable mention team. She is also a member of the Alvirne High outdoor track and field team.
Audrey Toce
Billerica
A senior guard, Tocce was a big reason why the Indians finished 19-3 on the season, both with her production on the floor and as a leader. She was named to the Merrimack Valley All-Conference team after averaging 9.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game. A three-sport team captain who’s also a leader in soccer and lacrosse, Toce will attend Emmanuel College, where she will continue to play soccer.
Haleigh Cyrus
Billerica
Cyrus and Toce formed a great 1-2 punch to help lead the Indians to an 19-3 record, which included a first-round state tournament win over Middleboro before losing to Norwood. A senior guard, she averaged 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 defensive steals per game. Cyrus, who was named to the Merrimack Valley All-Conference team, is also a two-year starter on the BMHS lacrosse team. She will attend and play basketball at Framingham State.
Bridget Trainor
Chelmsford
The Lions suffered through a number of injuries throughout the season and Trainor was one of the top players who stepped up, leading Chelmsford to a 12-9 overall record, including a trip to the Division 1 state tournament. Named to the Merrimack Valley All-Conference team, the senior guard averaged 13.1 points per game, including a very impressive 41 percent from beyond the three-point line. She also provided terrific defense. “Bridget was extremely consistent. She scores for us, plays defense and has just been providing tremendous leadership,” said head coach Mike Crowley during the season. Trainor will play at Framingham State.
Mary Keohane
Chelmsford
A three-year member of the CHS and a MVC All-Conference selection, Keohane, a senior guard, was instrumental in the team’s 12-win season and trip to the state tournament. She was immense defensively, leading the team in charges and also improved her offensive skills dramatically, especially down the stretch. “Mary was one of the toughest kids on the team,” said head coach Mike Crowley and “she defended consistently for us.” Keohane was also selected to the MVC second team in soccer.
Lamees Alasaad
Dracut
The previous two years, Alasaad played an important role in the Middies’ two straight MVC championship titles as well as last year’s trip to the state final. This year, as a senior, she was the lone starter back from those clubs and although the team struggled to win, she put up terrific numbers, averaging 13.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 5.0 defensive steals per game. Alasaad was named to the MVC All-Conference team a year after making the second team. She is also a two-time Sun All-Star who last season had over 100 rebounds and close to 100 steals.
Victoria McCoy
Littleton
In her three seasons with the Tigers, she helped the team post a 50-19 record. This season Littleton finished 17-6 and advanced to the third round of the Division 4 state tournament. The two-year captain and a three-year Mid-Wach League All-Star averaged 13.2 points and 4.0 assists per game. She led Central Mass. this season with 72 3-pointers. McCoy, who also played goalie for the field hockey team and will be back for her third year as the starting shortstop on the softball team, closed out her career with 902 points.
Sadie Tracy
Nashoba Tech
A four-year varsity member of the basketball and soccer programs, Tracy ends her hoop career as the second-leading scorer in program history with 1,135 points. The senior forward averaged 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 4.0 defensive steals per game, while helping the Vikings finish 10-10 overall, including a first-round state tournament win. A two-time Commonwealth Athletic All-Conference selection who also received many awards as a top goal scorer in soccer, Tracy, who excels academically, will attend Merrimack College in the fall.
Ashley Hart
Nashoba Tech
During a four-year stretch, Nashoba Tech had its top two all-time leading scorers on the same team. With fellow Sun All-Star Sadie Tracy at No. 2, Hart leaves the program as No. 1, scoring 1,190 points. A senior guard and a two-time All-Conference selection, she averaged 13.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest, while helping the Vikings win 10 games. Hart, who also plays softball and finished up a terrific soccer career at Nashoba Tech, will attend Fitchburg State.
Sophia Joncas
Pelham
A senior forward and three-year starter, Joncas had over 1,000 rebounds in her career. This season, she averaged 7.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. She was named to the New Hampshire Division 2 honorable mention team as well as the Division 2 All-Defensive team. She recently played in the New Hampshire Senior All-Star game and tallied nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the winning team. This past fall, Joncas was named to the Sun’s girls soccer second team and was a key player for the 2022 state champs. She also plays lacrosse at PHS.
Emily Picher
Tewksbury
A junior guard, Picher enjoyed a breakout season for the 11-11 Redmen, which included a first-round state tournament win over Westwood. The three-sport athlete, who also competes in soccer and lacrosse, averaged 11 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, which earned her Merrimack Valley All-Conference and team MVP honors. In two seasons, she has 389 points, 141 rebounds, 89 assists and 78 steals. Picher is also a strong student and a member of the DECA program at TMHS.
Eva Boudreau
Wilmington
A junior forward, Boudreau had a tremendous season for the Wildcats, averaging 16.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. She shot 30.3 percent from the floor. In three years, she has 840 points and is on her way to become the third female in program history to reach 1,000 points. She also has 437 career rebounds and 97 assists. A two-time Middlesex League all-star who also plays softball, Boudreau is hoping to play basketball in college and study athletic training.
