Taylor Swift fans left in TEARS over Tortured Poets Department: Social media erupts as Swifties call her new release ‘a masterpiece’ and her ‘best album ever’

Taylor Swift sent her fans into an emotional frenzy as she officially dropped her anticipated 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department – with Swifties already labeling the LP ‘a masterpiece.’ 

The Grammy winner, 34, also announced on Thursday that the first single from the new work is Fortnight, which features fellow music artist Post Malone. 

The album became available at 9p.m. (PST) and her dedicated fans have voiced their thoughts over the music, with some being driven to tears and others calling Tortured Poets the singer’s ‘best album.’ 

One typed, ‘IM CRYING RN. TAYLOR WE LOVE YOU!!!!’ while another added, ‘This is going to be the best album Taylor has made I know it.’ 

’13 seconds in and its already the best album,’ a follower penned, and one excitedly wrote, ‘OMG Taylor this is a masterpiece!! Thank you for this amazing album!! Love you.’ 

One fan on X added, ‘Me as soon as each track begins,’ and shared a one-second time marker as well as a GIF of Michael Jackson saying, ‘I love this song!’

‘I love it so much already,’ a Swiftie typed, while another penned, ‘THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM YOU’VE EVER MADE.’ 

’10 seconds into The Tortured Poets Department,’ one typed while adding a GIF of Max (Sadie Sink) from Stranger Things floating up into the air. 

Another social media user gushed, ‘You literally have a way with words that no one else has, it’s SO breathtaking. THANK you for all that you do, once again. now if you’ll excuse me, I got an album to stream all day.’ 

One also commented on Taylor’s single Fortnight with Post Malone while expressing their thrill over the album. 

‘Fortnight is so so soooooo good you and @PostMalone together #TSTTPD I can’t believe I went this long without you two on a track together! I’m so excited to delve into this album!’ 

Other fans offered their reactions to some of the other tracks, with Swifties theorizing the album is geared more towards ex, Matty Healy, rather than Joe Alwyn. Swift briefly dated the 1975 frontman last year following her split from the British actor.

‘the realization that this album is more about matty healy than joe alwyn,’ one penned, while another added, ‘Joe Alwyn breathing a sigh of relief tonight #TTPD.’ 

‘She so real for this. This album is so good and the same unique,’ a social media user wrote. 

Another pointed out, ‘It’s crazy but her saying that they think Charlie Puth should be bigger just confirms for me that the song is 100% Matty. That is exactly something Matty Healy would say,’ referencing to the track The Tortured Poets Department.

‘joe alwyn to matty healy tonight,’ a fan penned, along with a GIF of, ‘Call the ambulance! But not for me!’

One added, ‘joe alwyn you will begin to cough in two minutes,’ and shared the lyrics, ‘And I’m p***ed off you let me give you all that youth for free.’ 

Listeners commented on other lyrics, such as in the track titled, loml, where she sings, ‘And I’ll still see it until I die/You’re the loss of my life.’ 

Fans also mentioned Swift dropping names in the lyrics to Tortured Poets Department, with some theorizing she was referencing to pals Jack Antonoff and Lucy Dacus. 

‘THE LUCY DACUS AND JACK ANTONOFF NAMEDROPS??!?’ one wrote, and included the lyrics: ‘But you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave/And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen.’

Another shared the lyrics, ‘You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? I died in the altar waiting for the proof.’ 

One fan included the lyrics, ‘At dinner you take my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one people put wedding rings on. And that’s the closest I’ve come to my heart exploding.’ The Swiftie then added, ‘OH WHEN I CATCH HIM.’ 

To celebrate the release, Taylor took to social media and shared a message to her fans and followers. 

‘The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time – one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.’ 

She added, ‘This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed.’ 

‘And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.’

Taylor concluded with, ‘And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is out now.’

The star kept to the black-and-white theme, and uploaded a few close-up snaps of herself along with a full-body image while standing inside an empty space. 

The beauty wore a strapless, cropped top as well as a high-waisted, full skirt that was slightly bunched up in her hands. 

Ahead of the release, Taylor kept busy by taking to social media to reveal that Fortnight, featuring Post Malone, would be the first single from the album. 

Alongside a photo of the songstress and the Circles hitmaker, she penned, ‘The first single from The Tortured Poets Department is…………. Fortnight featuring @postmalone.’ 

She then expressed, ‘I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever.’ 

‘I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight. Honestly can’t wait for you guys to hear this song at Midnight TONIGHT and see the video at 8pm ET TOMORROW.’ 

And later on Thursday, she also teased the black-and-white music video that accompanies the single – which is slated to drop on Friday. 

The short snippet began with the words, ‘I love you,’ being typed repeatedly on a piece of paper. The video then jumped to cuts of both Taylor and Post Malone, and at one point, the pair shared an embrace on an open road. 

Swift then could be seen wearing a gothic, Victorian dress while she was in a room and appeared to be crying as she sat a desk writing. 

Towards the end, the star sported a strapless gown as she tossed a chair in a window. Fans then saw a close-up of the singer’s face as she sent a dramatic gaze directly at the camera, ending the teaser. 

‘At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings,’ the Blank Space songstress wrote in the caption while counting down to the album’s release. 

The songstress initially announced the album while attending the 2024 Grammys earlier this year in February.

The title of her latest work had caused fans to speculate that the name was aimed at her ex, Joe Alwyn. And earlier this week, Swift appeared to reference the actor as she shared lyrics from the album on X.

The Tortured Poets Department has a total of four versions, as well as a 16 songs and a bonus track titled The Manuscript. 

Since the announcement of the album, she’s revealed three additional versions of The Tortured Poets Department: The Bolter, The Albatross and The Black Dog. Each version – which could be pre-ordered by listeners – also contain an exclusive track. 

One day after her album announcement, Swift dropped the official track list to the LP. She also has collaborations with other artists such as Post Malone on Fortnight and Florence & The Machine on the song called Florida!!!

As if 16 songs weren’t enough, fans learned that Swift included a ‘summary poem’ with the album.

In regards to the album title, fans were quickly convinced that the name was in reference to her ex, Joe Alwyn – whom she dated for six years until their split was confirmed in April 2023.

Back in 2022, the British-born actor explained that he was part of a WhatsApp group chat with close pals Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott called The Tortured Man Club.

Fans have also speculated that her latest work might possible reference to her short romance with The 1975 frontman, Matty Healy, and also her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. 

Before the Super Bowl earlier this year, the NFL star expressed to Extra, ‘I have heard some of it, yes. And it is unbelievable.’

‘I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops,’ he continued, while later adding, ‘I can’t give you anything. I’ll leave that up to her.’

The football player added, ‘She’s unbelievable. She’s re-writing the history books herself. I told her, ‘I’ll have to hold up my end of the bargain and bring home some hardware, too.”
