PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Homelessness in Rhode Island has been a challenge for many, and in recent years, advocates say its been on the rise.

The Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness plans to unveil an action plan Tuesday calling for a $30 million budget amendment to prevent further unsheltered homelessness in the state.

The coalition said there’s a 76% budget cut statewide homelessness services, which they say could eliminate approximately 1,000 shelter beds, exacerbating the current, record-high, levels of unsheltered homelessness.

According to recent data collected by the state’s Homeless Management Information System, at the beginning of the month, 529 Rhode Islanders experienced unsheltered homelessness, a 645% increase since January 2019.

In a release, the state is expecting 346 beds to close by the end of the month.

The press conference will be held at 3 p.m. at the State House.
