CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The veteran’s group Carry the Load marches in honor of fallen service members, reminding us all of the true meaning of Memorial Day. Today they marched through the Capital Region and the parents of two local heroes, killed recently in a helicopter crash, joined them.

The parents of Casey Frankoski and John Grassia met up in Rensselaer with the rest of the Carry the Load group. Some literally carrying the load.

“I’m carrying my ruck sack which is army issued right now it’s about 30 pounds,” said Connor Danz.

“We’ re changing Memorial Day to Memorial May,” said Adam Hernandez.

“This is for my Casey, Aunt Casey,” said Casey’s niece.

Frankoski and Grassia were killed when their helicopter crashed on the Texas-Mexico border, back in March. With each step of this walk, their moms shared memories of love and friendship.

“One thing we want everybody to know is that they were best friends. They worked together for a very long time; they loved flying together. We were told by many people in their units and others that they were like brother and sister. They loved like brother and sister, and they fought like brother and sister, and they loved flying together,” said Judith Grassia.

“My daughter was the most beautiful shining star and her love for John as Judy just said it was immeasurable, but I just want to take this moment to thank the community near and far for all the support because we really are blessed with having a wonderful community, family and friends and we do see you out there. Thank you very much, we wouldn’t be able to get through this without you all,” said Jill Frankoski.

Both service members had received numerous military honors before their lives were cut short. Now two families connected by one tragedy. “And they were best friends. Now we’re bound to become best friends,” said Jill.

“We are bounded for life,” said Judith.

NEWS10 Reporter James De La Fuente asked the families if they had any words of advice for any other parents dealing with loss.

“It’s so fresh for us. We’re still trying to learn this new life and navigate,” said Casey’s Mom.

“I’m still trying to believe it’s real, you know?” stated John’s Mom.

“We are still in shock. Tomorrow will be 2 months and we don’t want anyone to ever forget our children,” said Frankoski.

Both families shared their appreciation for the outpouring of support from the community.

“And we’d also like to remember Chris Luna, he’s the border agent who was killed in the accident and Jake Pratt who is still recovering give them your support the best you can and just thank you everybody we do see your support whether we answer you or not it’s made the difference and it’s what’s getting us through,” finished James Frankoski.
